Joyfulness is more of a framework and less of a checklist, so I hope you are able to see that idea reflected in how the items were presented above. I am a person who finds lists, scripts, examples, models, exact definitions, and fine details very helpful, but I also recognize that that is just part of how my brain works. When it comes to being a joyful stay-at-home mom and housewife, I think that our emphasis should be more on what best suits our personality and style and less on uniformity. Our children and husbands don’t need a robot to keep things going (although, we can sometimes feel like one with the amount of routine and repetitiveness that our domestic life consists of). They just need us.
Of course we will make our lists and keep them, too. We will script ourselves, model ourselves after others we like, pick things apart until the infinitesimal grain of truth comes out, and obsess over all the details no matter how fine. We will do all of those things because that is how we are. But remember, too, that doing this job well is not just about keeping a list and checking things off it, as if being a joyful stay-at-home mom and housewife is a matter of doing things on a list. It’s about heart and attitude and love. Motivation, desire, fulfillment.
