Whether we’re talking about playing outside, taking baths, or reading bedtime stories, it’s interesting that the general time frame that activities seem to naturally exist within is about 30 minutes. Yes, if we’re in a hurry, 15 minutes (or 10 or 5) is all we need. And if we’re having fun (yes, it happens), an hour or two can fly by in no time. But in general, give everything about 30 minutes to happen. This may seem like an eternity if, in our former life, we were used to spending no extra seconds doing any given thing—but by keeping our expectations realistic of how long things actually take with kids, we won’t be setting ourselves up for needless disappointment, frustration, or feelings of failure.
