It’s so easy to fall into this pattern—the chip on our shoulder thing. We think something is owed to us because of everything we’ve done to be considered good parents to our kids. But here is one of the greatest little perspective enlargements we can make: The chip on our shoulder just weighs us down! Life (including parenting!) is so much more enjoyable—lighter and freer and more wonderful—when we aren’t keeping track of what we’ve given up and what we think we’re owed. When we do what we do because it’s the right thing to do, then that is reward enough. We can live with clear consciences, knowing that we are doing our part to make and keep our family strong.
