When we interact with our kids, it helps us keep the joy alive in our parenting responsibilities when we can take two steps back emotionally. Yes, still be emotionally engaged! But no, not so emotionally engaged that we lose perspective and take everything a little too seriously and a little too personally. So take two steps back emotionally—one for yourself and one for your child. It is important for us to stay just enough detached so that we can parent well as we are anchored in deliberateness instead of letting ourselves be yanked around by all the stuff parenting involves.
