Getting out of a victim mentality means that we will need to take responsibility for ourselves and our families (that is, the family that is ours now—our spouse and children). We can still be kind and generous and forgiving towards our family of origin, but we can’t look to them or anyone else to actually help us anymore (we have already come to this conclusion long ago). But what is more important to grasp now is that no one can truly help us except ourselves. We have to be the ones who decide to actually do something about our life. And then do it. Of course we need the supernatural help of our God. That is a given. But once we understand this, we can proceed in strength and confidence, knowing that we are not alone in our endeavor to live a healthy, well-functioning, and up-building life.
