“From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I” (Psalm 61:2 KJV).
Being home all day with our kids sounds awesome (and sometimes it is!), but many of the days we go through contain varying degrees of overwhelming-ness for the simple reason that it’s not just us. We do our best to control what we can, but throw some kids in there at different stages of development, and it’s a whole other thing. When our heart is overwhelmed (and I don’t know about you, but lately I’ve felt like this is all the time), we can cry out to God, and he will lead us all the more sure-footed-ly to him, to his presence, to his protection, to his help, to his security. He is the rock that is higher than we are. We can trust him to hold us and to stabilize us and to guide us. We can trust him to help us! We can trust him to mend us. We can trust him to calm us. We can trust him to be patient with us. We can trust him to love us.
Let us learn from God—and not only treat our children the way God treats us but to really receive the gifts God wants to give us simply by way of our resting in his presence. We can stay in this state all day long, resting in God’s presence and receiving all of the gifts he longs to lavish on us. When we are focused on this, then everything else just fades away. “A single day in your courts is better than a thousand anywhere else! I would rather be a gatekeeper in the house of my God than live the good life in the homes of the wicked. For the Lord God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right. O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, what joy for those who trust in you” (Psalm 84:10–12 NLT).
Prayer of Response:
O Lord, thank you for leading me into your presence. Thank you that you are the rock that is higher than I am. Thank you for hearing my cry and for surrounding me with your love. Help me to know and feel that everything is okay and will be okay as long as I stick with you. Amen.
Confession of Faith:
I will cry out to God when my heart is overwhelmed. God will lead me to the sturdy and towering protection of his presence, for he is higher than I am (Psalm 62:1 KJV).
