Our Happy Ending Starts Now

When We Feel Fear

Scripture Reading:

“For you are my hiding place; / you protect me from trouble. / You surround me with songs of victory” (Psalm 32:7 NLT).

Commentary:

When we feel fear, we must immediately remember that God is our hiding place.  He is the one who protects us from trouble—every kind of trouble.  He surrounds us with songs of victory—even now as we are facing fear.  There is nothing that God cannot do.  There is a church song from a long time ago entitled, “Ah, Lord, God!” and the verse for it is here: “O Sovereign LORD!  You made the heavens and earth by your strong hand and powerful arm.  Nothing is too hard for you!” (Jeremiah 32:17 NLT).  I also remember return address labels I had as an adolescent that said, “With God all things are possible,” and that verse is here: “And Jesus looking upon them saith, ‘With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible’” (Mark 10:27 KJV).

Let us remember to hide ourselves in God.  He will protect us.  He will surround us so that nothing will overwhelm or overtake us.  We must believe that God can do anything.  Jesus’ own words of instruction to us are this: “Be not afraid, only believe” (Mark 5:36 KJV).  Our little puny minds might not be able to comprehend how God can work in our seemingly impossible situation, but at some point, we must make the decision to trust God even if we aren’t completely sold.  The decision to trust displaces the doubt that lingers.  As long as we have human minds, there will always be doubt that comes along—God gave us these minds to think with, and we have gotten good at thinking about things without a spiritual reference point.  So let us act on the trust we have decided to give God and hide ourselves in him, no matter what we are facing.  This doesn’t mean we hide, like run away and bury our heads in the sand like an ostrich.  It means we hide ourselves in God.  We hand it all over to him as we face our day and face our challenges.  God will help us!  Only believe.

Prayer of Response:

Dear God, Thank you that I can hide myself in you.  Help me to trust you as you work in my life.  Displace my doubts with your love.  Help me to hear the songs of victory that you have surrounded me with.  Help me to receive your gift of protection as you stop all trouble from harming me.  I hand over my fear, and I hand over my life to you.

Confession of Faith:

God is my hiding place.  God protects me from trouble.  God surrounds me with songs of victory (Psalm 32:7 NLT).
