When We Feel Powerless

Scripture Reading:

“But as for me, I will always proclaim what God has done; I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.  For God says, ‘I will break the strength of the wicked, but I will increase the power of the godly’” (Psalm 75:10 NLT).

Did you know that once we invite Jesus into our heart that we are now “the godly”?  We can’t earn this title by anything we do ourselves.  It’s not like we get awarded the badge of “the godly” once we walk so many steps with Jesus (which would be an interesting Fitbit app).  Or that we have to act a certain way or think a certain way.  The title of “the godly” is ours if we have received Jesus as ours—because we are certainly his!  So every time we see references to “the godly” or “the righteous” in the Bible, we can immediately say to ourselves, “That’s me!”  We don’t have to think, “Oh, that’s not me because I’m not like so-and-so who’s super holy,” or, “No, that’s not me because I messed up so bad yesterday and I have to work my way back up to godly status.”  God is the one who makes us holy—and it’s our faith in God and our faith in his gift of redemption through his Son Jesus that transmits holiness to us.  It is a spiritual transaction and, resultingly, a spiritual transformation.

“Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us” (Romans 5:1 NLT).  Also, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV).  What encouraging verses.  What this means for us is that we can take verses like Psalm 75:10 and rest in the promise that God will increase our power as we stick with him!  Being a stay-at-home mom is tough work, and there are days when it feels like we have no strength left—and no control over anything!  But God says that he increases the power of the godly, and this is a promise for us.  Let us lean on God as he helps us through our day and imparts the strength and power we need to be an effective mom and wife, always representing the loving-kindness of our Lord as we care well for our family.

Prayer of Response:

Dear Jesus, Thank you for the gift of new life in you, and thank you for living in my heart, giving me peace and direction and strength every day.  I pray, God, that you will strengthen my heart as I learn to lean on the spiritual truth that you alone have made me godly.  Help me to trust your words that you will increase my power—because I need to feel more effective!  I need to know that everything is alright and that everything will turn out okay.  I love you for your greatness and for your generosity.  Amen.

Confession of Faith:

God has made me right in his sight by faith; I have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ my Lord has done for me (Romans 5:1 NLT).  I am the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV).  I will always proclaim what God has done because he increases the power of the godly (Psalm 75:10 NLT).
